Residents are being invited to have their say on an updated Air Quality Action Plan for Kendal town centre.

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) works across the district to reduce concentrations of air pollutants and exposure to air pollution to improve the health and quality of life of residents and visitors.

The council developed an Air Quality Action Plan to cover roads in Kendal town centre as monitoring showed this was the only part of the district where, in some areas, levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) from road traffic was exceeding government guidelines.

This action plan is now being updated and a consultation on the revised plan runs until 8 August 2016.

NO2 is the only pollutant of concern in South Lakeland.  It is a respiratory irritant, can make asthma worse and reduces the body’s ability to fight infection.

The action plan was developed to prioritise measures to reduce levels of NO2 in Kendal town centre.

Since the first action plan was introduced in 2011 a number of projects have been delivered, including promotion of cycling activities and a review of cycle parking provision - which included improved bike parking facilities and a cycle hub at the Westmorland Shopping Centre in Kendal - encouraging taxi drivers to use cleaner vehicles, reduced price parking permits for cleaner vehicles and working with developers at the planning stage to incorporate measures to reduce car travel and air pollution in any new building schemes.

Latest results show that in 2015 only one monitoring site out of 33 in the district was showing levels of pollution above the target set by the Government.

The results also show that levels of NO2 at the site above the target level, on Lowther Street in Kendal, have improved since the previous year.

The revised Air Quality Action Plan includes priorities to progress the Kendal masterplan, which will examine all aspects of town centre management including air quality and traffic management, looking at controlling HGVs on Lowther Street, reducing emissions from buses in Kendal town centre and reviewing car parking provision in Kendal.
