Over 100 local businesses received expert advice on how to promote themselves online at a special event held in South Lakeland.

Google teamed up with South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) to host the free business event in Kendal on Wednesday, July 13, at the Brewery Arts Centre.

The first of two presentations gave advice on how to make your website stand out on computers and mobile devices.

The second gave businesses the chance to learn about digital marketing and how to use online marketing tools to reach prospective customers.

James Morris, of Taxis Kendal, said: “I found it very useful and gained lots of good ideas, particularly around the importance and types of social media.

“I would definitely recommend the event and found the handy digital booklets, which were given out by email, very useful.”

In the last year the council has been involved in organising regular networking and advice events for businesses in South Lakeland through its Invest in South Lakeland programme. These events have now been attended by over 1,000 business people.

Google’s Digital Garageprogramme includes a series of events where the web giant travels the country giving local businesses tips on how to make the most of their web presence.

Matt Williams, project officer for SLDC’s economic development team, said: “We were delighted to host this free Google event and to see so many South Lakeland businesses in attendance.

“Events such as this are important in providing our business community with a competitive advantage. This was an excellent opportunity to hear from experts and for businesses to have their questions answered.”

Anybody who could not attend on the day can see the presentations on Invest in South Lakeland, while there are also more online resources available at Google Digital Garage.
